LSC Brings Automatic Migration and Secure Backup to 6000 Computers at the Technical University Berlin

(SAINT PAUL, MINNESOTA) -- LSC, Incorporated, a premier provider of large data storage systems, has recently installed and successfully tested a new migration and backup system at the Technical University in Berlin, Germany. The installed SAM-FS software provided by LSC will be used by the approximately 2000 UNIX workstations and 4000 PCs that are connected to the university LAN. The new system (comprised of a double processor Sun system, RAID-5 disk array and ATL/Odetics jukebox) provides total archiving capacity of more than 2.5 terabytes, giving users at the Technical University an opportunity to enjoy "unlimited" disk space.

Increased Space Demands Spawn New System

For more than five years the scientists and students at Berlin's prestigious Technical University had worked with their existing archiving system. But drastically enlarged data sets led the institution to examine alternatives and set higher standards for the their archiving system that would allow them to rely on it well into the future.

LSC's SAM-FS Software

LSC's Storage and Archive Manager File SystemÖ (SAM-FS) is a feature-rich Hierarchical Storage Management (HSM) system which provides a complete set of data storage management tools for network administrators. It was selected for the Technical University project for its ability to automatically migrate and backup data according to set standards.

Since the system will be used in a heterogeneous environment (ftp and NFS), an open solution was also important. SAM-FS is designed to store all data to ANSI standards, ensuring that regardless of future systems modifications, all data will be secure and retrievable by any system.

Fast Integration With Experienced Partners

The complexities of university-wide migration and backup efforts required absolute cooperation between hardware and software components - and between key personnel at the University and LSC. "Especially during the testing period, the competence and efficiency of the American software developer, LSC, convinced us that the project was well under control," declared Mr. Gⁿlker, head of the department for basis software at the computer center. "Problems that I reported via email in the evening were often analyzed, and in many cases completely solved, when I arrived the next morning."

Installation and testing were additionally supported by Mr. Peter Weinrich, software specialist with Control Data, the company that sells and supports SAM-FS throughout Germany. Control Data acted as the total system integrator for planning, installation and testing of all hardware and software components.

Successful Automatic Migration of Data from Disk to Jukebox to Tape

SAM-FS is currently automatically allocating data to the devices available to it according to the standards set by the university. Its automatic backup function saves time while it effectively safeguards user data. The system currently uses one robot system with three read/write units. The existing software will easily accommodate a second robot for further expansion.

The success of the project at the Technical University Berlin is not going unnoticed within Germany. Other SAM-FS archiving systems have been installed at the UFZ (Environmental Research Center) in Leipzig, Germany, DLR (German Aerospace Research Establishment) in Oberpfaffenhofen, Germany and DLR, Neustrelitz, Germany.
